Whereas every company and healthcare provider has targeted the urban population, the rural sector in India continues to remain largely underserved, About 75% of health infrastructure, medical man power and other health resources are concentrated in urban areas where 27% of the population lives. Healthcare in India is urban centric which is evident from the following table.

The current annual per capita public health expenditure in the country is no more than Rs. 200 (source: National Health Policy, 2002). Given these statistics, it is no surprise that the reach and quality of public health services has been below the desirable standard when it comes to rural India
